Professor Robert Weiss has just completed a study of retirement that focused on the effects on men and women of leaving their community of work. Professor Weiss’s area of specialization has long been the social and emotional impact of relational loss and change. He continues to try to understand these issues as they are expressed in bereavement, loneliness, and social isolation, and in the lives of older people. He is also trying to understand the experiences or understandings or emotions that make for different expectations and behaviors in different types of relationships.

Most of Professor Weiss's empirical work has used the methods of qualitative interviewing and, to a lesser extent, participant observation. He continues to be interested in the development of these ways of learning.
