Demographics: Elders in Massachusetts

Poverty in Massachusetts and the United States

Although the poverty rate for individuals of all ages rose in Massachusetts between 1989 and 1999, the risk of poverty declined slightly for seniors. As a result, older individuals living in Massachusetts are somewhat less likely to be poor than is the average Massachusetts resident. At the national level, poverty declined much more dramatically for individuals aged 65 and older than was observed in Massachusetts, from 12.8% in1989 to 9.9% in 1999. The total poverty rate for all ages also declined at the national level, opposite the pattern observed for Massachusetts.
