Title:

Motivation for Productive Aging

Brief Description:

The project seeks to develop a general measure of motivation to be active that is separate from measures of motivation for specific productive activities. The project is also developing a general measure of barriers to productive activity.

The possibility that these two measures help to explain overall activity levels among older people is being examined. A first round of data collection on a pilot survey was conducted in 2003. A new instrument that includes obstacle questions and extends the content to include exercising and taking classes has been developed. The feasibility of surveying older people on the internet is being explored. This project is a continuation of work initiated through the Changes in Productive Activities in Later Life study. The current project is laying the groundwork for a funded research project that makes use of the instrument that is being developed.
