Title:
Pilot Study: Aging in Place at Harbor Point
Brief Description:
In April 2004, gerontology students at the University of Massachusetts Boston conducted interviews
with 50 older adults at Harbor Point. They were following up on the Seniors Count survey recently
conducted by the Boston Commission on Elder Affairs. They asked residents age 60+ about their
experiences of aging-in-place at Harbor Point and how well the information from the Seniors Count
program has helped them to meet their needs. These interviews are part of an Elder Action Research
course in which students plan and participate in a research project. Many of the students are
older adults themselves. The class is a required part of the Manning Certificate Program in
Gerontology, which was designed for working or recently retired adults who want to better
understand issues of aging and build on their existing skills to advocate for elders. Information
generated from this study will help identify current use of available services and unmet needs
among elders at Harbor Point. A project report will be available Fall 2004.
